Wouldn't it be nice if pledges actually meant something...

Ripped straight from Scottish Unionist comes news of another abandoned pledge made in the SNP's 2007 manifesto.

In that manifesto they set out the very laudable goal of providing free access to council swimming pools for all children in Scotland. Swimming pools provide a fun and safe environment for anyone and especially children to take part in a healthy past time. Providing free swimming is especially beneficial to low income families who perhaps cannot afford other activities. If the SNP live up to this promise I will certainly applaud them for it.

Unfortunately...

...as reported by the Press Association, Herald and Scotsman, only Glasgow and Inverclyde councils offer free swimming pool access for children, as was the case before the Scottish election.

This not the first time we have covered broken promises from the SNP, and I doubt it will be the last.

  1. It's a disgrace that the SNP haven't delivered on this pledge yet.

Labour in England are about to introduce 50% availability for under 16's for only £50MIllion as part of the Olympic Legacy Package.

Unfortunately the other 50% councils, mostly conservative and liberal democrat run ones have refused to instigate the policy on costs grounds.

Why hasn't the Scottish Government found £10million to make swimming free here for under 16's?

  2. The Scotsman managed to condense all the SNP's broken promises into one article last week, will try and find the link. Among these was the promise to write off the debt students domiciled in Scotland. A realistic promise? i think not.

  3. It's a disgrace that the SNP have only cancelled the £2000 Graduate Fee and not tackled wider student debt yet.

  4. @Grahamski: And you can bet that at the general election those parties that are not instigating the policy will try to muddy the water by highlighting shortfalls in service provision when it is non-Labour councils that are responsible for it.

@Amy: Thanks I'd like to see an article like that.

@SCOTTISHUNION: Especially when they pledged to do so.
